Turn Candelabrum by Design House Stockholm
Candles creates live luminescence in the dark Nordic winter. Turn, by Mikaela Midell and Maria Nyholm, uses simplicity and a straightforward functionality to set the light in focus. Three precisely bent steel tubes provide perfect fit for six candles rising to varying heights. Hard meets soft in a seamless transition from the blue power-coated candelabra to the white candles.
Mikaela and Maria got a 7-week assignment to create a product as well as a trademark. during their studies at Beckmans School of Design. A sketchy drawing of a candelabra became their plan. Let there be light in the dark days during the Scandinavian winter. With environmental responsibility as a cue, they landed in the reuse of steel. Instead of superfluous ornamentation, they chose to reduce and reduce a tubular framework until they arrived at an elegant backdrop embracing the whole ensemble in a firm grip. The candles themselves are in focus clamoring for all attention.
"We opted for a candelabra since it is a bit rare on the market," explains Mikaela Midell. "Turn is quite big and will command any space. The candles reach different heights thanks to our configuration and will bring about a dynamic movement. I’ve placed mine on the floor, but why not on a pedestal as a statement?’"
"We were asked to produce a batch of 10 for a design market, but we ended up with 20", exclaims Maria Nyholm. "They were supposed to last for a month but were sold out on-line in a couple of hours and we had hurry up making more."
The six-branched candelabra’s each arm contains a concealed stop that will keep the candles in place, as well as impeding any wax to find its way into the tubes. Silicon pads underneath will protect any surface, and the powder-coating is fully environmentally friendly.
The simplicity of the design and the raw industrial materiality will let Turn fit into any kind of ambience, be it old-fashioned or truly modern. And the minimalist elegance will not shy away from being challenged by the dripping wax. Keep it perfectly clean, or let the candles trickle out all over and create chaotic patterns that will contrast with the exact form language.

Made entirely out of steel, Turn is sustainability at its core. No unnecessary additions, just raw steel. Only one material that is easy to recycle and reuse. Turn is also proudly looking back to the power of the Bauhaus’ aesthetic where designers arrived at the essence of form by keeping on reducing until satisfaction was attained.
